Well, it’s that time of the year again… Summer is right around the corner! But it’s also time to take a deep breath and reassess where you are on your journey. It’s always important to look at where you are now before you can start planning your future goals.
Today I am not going to waste your time talking you through setting up goals. You all know this already. It has been drummed into you… a lot, but what I am going to tell you is something that will really make a difference.
A quick test for you- What is a goal without a plan?
Hopefully, you are all jumping up and down with the answer. Well, maybe not jumping. The simple answer is a WISH.

Here is the formula for successfully achieving your goals:
Step 1: Convert your wish into a goal.
Step 2: A goal must have a plan based on specific action steps that are both measurable and have a timeframe. Without both of those two critical components, it becomes a wish again.
Step 3: The combination of all your action steps should overwhelmingly convince you that if you follow each of those steps… then you will achieve your goals.
Taking that first step in converting your wish into a goal is important. You may be sitting there thinking “I wish I could lose weight”. Well, how are you going to lose that weight? You need to build a plan. Each action step in your plan needs to have a timeframe, and be measurable! This is critical because without those two things it becomes a wish and it is easy to forget about your end goal, and not hold yourself accountable.
When building your action steps, be careful of the volume vs the quality of your action steps. You need to follow the 80:20 rule when it comes to creating these steps. Don’t get wrapped up in doing everything at once.
You want to do the 20% of things that create 80% of the results you are hoping to achieve.

Plus, if you throw the kitchen sink at them it can get overwhelming. So instead of listing out 10 things that will help you lose weight. Think, what are the top 2-3 things that are going to help you the most to lose weight? Now, as your goals begin to progress you can always add in additional steps… but start small. This is the only way you will consistently achieve your goals. Eventually, when you start to follow this format you will be able to juggle multiple large goals, with small actional steps.
At the same time, the action steps you create need to convince you that if you do this task then you will reach that goal. If you don’t believe that you can hit that goal with your certain action steps, then it is a pointless exercise. Once you have created your action steps bounce them off someone else. Do they agree with you? Do they confirm what you believe? Do they think you are realistic enough? Do you believe they are realistic enough?
So as you go to build your plan, think about what is really going to turn a goal into a result and not just a wish! Once this plan is built it should not just go into a black box and be forgotten about. Put each measurable goal in your calendar and keep it in front of you, so you don’t forget what you need to do. Have a way of keeping yourself accountable, that might be a coach, a friend, a colleague, a family member. But whoever it is make sure they really understand what your goal is and its importance to you. Surrounding yourself with the right people who can help you is just as important.
