You’ve probably heard it more than once: drinking more water will help you lose more weight. But does water really help weight loss? The short answer is yes. So today, I want to answer some of the most common questions I hear in regards to this liquid gold.

1. Can water help burn fat?

It is not a magic bullet, no. However, staying fully hydrated (which is actually hard) while eating a healthy diet, exercising and getting enough rest will help you lose weight and keep it off, but simply drinking more water and making no other changes is not enough to burn off a significant amount of fat.

2. How many calories do you burn if you drink a gallon of water?

Studies have shown that water (cold water) temporarily boosted metabolism, causing participants to burn an extra 24 calories. Reason behind this is your body works hard to warm up the water once you have consumed it. So drinking one 8-ounce glass of water burns about 12 calories. By drinking 2 liters of water per day, you could burn nearly 100 calories! Make that 2 liters every day of the week and that’s an extra 700 calories per week!

3. How else can water help with weight loss?

Drinking water also helps suppress your appetite. Drinking it before meals can make you feel fuller, therefore reducing the amount of food you eat. Health resource website WebMD states that drinking water before meals results in an average reduction in intake of 75 calories per meal. Drinking water before just one meal per day would cause you to ingest 27,000 fewer calories per year. Do the math: You’d lose about eight pounds per year just from drinking water! Now imagine if you drank it before each meal. Crazy right?

It can cleanse your body of waste. Water flushes toxins and waste from the body and transports nutrients to where they are needed. Without water the contents of your colon can dry out and get stuck. Short version: daily water intake is essential for our bodies to function efficiently.

4. Water in a nutshell….

There are so many other benefits we could go in to, but in case you were curious here the short list. Water can also help your muscles perform at their best, boost brain function and mood, prevent and treat headaches, prevent constipation, flush toxins from the kidneys, make your skin look good, prevent those dreaded hangovers, help regulate internal body temperature, and fight bad breath!

Wrapping Up
